".....Remember the solidarity shown to Palestine here and everywhere...
and remember also that there is a cause to which many people have
committed themselves, difficulties and terrible obstacles notwithstanding.
Why? Because it is a just cause, a noble ideal,
a moral quest for equality and human rights......."

Prof. Edward W. Said (1935-2003)

......................................................................................

My dear brother : you and ME...

You worry about your education
And the bills you have to pay.
I worry about my vulnerable life
And if I'll survive another day.
Each day you wake in tranquility.
No fears to cross your eyes.
Each day I wake in gratitude.
Thanking God he let me rise.

You blame me for defending myself
Against the ways of Zionists
I'm terrorized in my own land
And I'm the terrorist????

You think that you know all about terrorism
But you don't know it the way I do.
So let me define the term for you.
And teach you what you thought you knew.

DESTRUCTION

It's hard to describe the destruction and despair in Palestine, subject to daily incursions from the Israeli army and sleepless nights as the bullets pound into the houses. Everywhere you turn in Palestine you can see the scars of the occupation. Every home and shop has bullet holes through their walls and windows, every road is dug up to prevent quick travel, telephone wires are cut, and water towers are IOF targets. The economic sabotage of the Palestinian society by the Israeli occupation is complete and devastating.

KILLINGS

In 2007 (up to 29 December), Israeli security forces killed 373 Palestinians (290 in Gaza, 83 in the West Bank), 53 among them minors. By comparison, in 2006, 657 Palestinians were killed, including 140 minors: 523 in Gaza, 134 in the West Bank. In 2007, about 35 percent of those killed were civilians who were not taking part in the hostilities when killed. This is a reduction in comparison with the number of casualties who did not participate in the hostilities in 2006, which was 54 percent, (348 persons).

FREEDOM OF MOVEMENT

The number of permanent checkpoints on average 102 barely changed from 2006. Sixty-six of these checkpoints control movement inside the West Bank (16 are in Hebron), and 36 are the final inspection point before entering Israel. The army also sets up dozens of flying checkpoints. In the second half of 2007, the average number of flying checkpoints dropped, from 141 in May to 69 in November.

Israel continues to maintain physical roadblocks, which limit access to major roads and channel traffic to staffed checkpoints. In recent years, the number of these roadblocks has increased, from an average of 410 in 2005 to 445 in 2006 to 459 in 2007. In addition, Israel forbids or limits Palestinian travel on over 300 kilometers of roads in the West Bank. The movement restrictions and the resulting geographical fragmentation severely harm central social institutions and systems serving the Palestinian population in the occupied territories, including the health system, the economy, family networks and municipal services.

HOPE

I was greatly inspired by a Palestinian revolutionary of the 1930 by Izzuddin Kassam, a man who embodied the spirit of resistance and who organised the first working class and peasant revolution in the Arab homeland. He had been organising his Underground for several years. In 1935, seeing the continuing betrayal of his people, he launched an armed struggle which he intended to be the beginning of a people's war of liberation against the enemies: British imperialism, Zionism, and Arab backwardness. The revolutionaries were workers, peasants, students and other progressive groups. The revolt was a revolt of the oppressed and it was suppressed by the British with the aid of the Zionists and Arab reactionaries. Palestine was lost to Zionism between 1936 and 1939, not between 1946 and 1948 as historians would have us believe. In 1936, a peasant uprising engulfed the entire country in a general strike that lasted from April to October. Its goal was to insure Palestinian Arab identity by the establishment of a democratic state, the expulsion of the British and the cessation of Zionist immigration to Palestine. The only result was that the British set up one of their time-honoured imperial devices: the Royal Commission, which in 1937 recommended the partition of Palestine. The Defence party of Palestine -a front organisation of King Abdullah and the British-agreed to the proposal. The revolutionary struggle intensified but resistance was finally crushed by a traitorous Palestinian leadership and its "peace regiments"; by Arab government trusteeship and its "mediation", and finally by British-Zionist military collaboration. Kassam was martyred. His martyrdom precipitated a political cataclysm, but his revolution was finally buried by his enemies; his memory was blotted out by his detractors. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine begins where Kassam left off: his generation started the revolution; my generation intends to finish it.
